Science Project Information (Human Body)

Dear Parents/Guardians,

I have posted below the criteria/instructions for the science project for your reference. We have already been working on this for the past couple of weeks but since the due date is coming up in less than 2 weeks, I want to make sure that you are aware of it. Students were given copies of the instructions/criteria in French.

.Research Project- The Human Body
Since September, we have been learning about the human body and its body systems. As a final project, students have the opportunity to research an organ, a body system, or something of interest to them regarding the human body. Students can do this project with a partner or alone. Students will be teaching the class about what they have learned and discovered from their research. The project includes a written part (the research and the answers to the questions below) and and a visual part (make a poster with photos, make a model, make diagrams, do an experiment…be creative with this!). The written part needs to be revised, edited and written neatly by hand or can be typed on the computer. I have already talked to the students about writing about the information they find in their own words. They also know that they cannot take their information that is written in English and use Google translator to translate it for them…they need to translate their information on their own! A helpful online dictionary can be found at www.wordreference.com. I have also told students that they can come and see and I can look over their work.
These are steps to get started…
1.      Think of a topic that you want to research. (ex. An organ, a specific body part, a body system, or an interesting phenomenon about the human body). Discuss your idea with Mme Mikes.

2.      Research! During the afternoons on Tuesdays, the Ipads are booked for you to use. We also have computer time on Mondays to do research. Research can be done in English but your project has to be written in French in your own words! Here are some useful websites:

www.brainpop.fr – Sciences de la vie
http://www.sciencekids.co.nz/sciencefacts/humanbody.html

3.      The written part needs to be written in French and needs to be at least 3 paragraphs long and must answer the following three questions :

1.      Describe the subject you have chosen (What is its’ function? Why is it important to the human body? Where is it located? How does it work?, etc.)
2.      Describe at least 5 interesting facts about your subject.
3.      Why did you choose this subject? What do you find interesting about it?
****All websites that you have used need to be documented on the sheet attached to the project criteria sheet given in class****
The project is due: Monday, November 18th

Evaluation Criteria of the Human Body Project

Excellent
Good
Satisfactory
Needs Work
Use of class time
Works very hard during class time, uses time wisely and efficiently
Works hard during class time, does not waste time.
Generally works hard but does not always use time wisely.
Wastes a lot of time. Uses time to socialize with others or other activities unrelated to project.
Written Part (research
information, and responses to questions)
Research is relevant, clear, very well-explained with lots of detail in your own words. All the questions are answered very well. The student shows a lot of interest in the subject chosen.
The research is relevant, clear, and explained well in your own words. All the questions are answered well.
The research is relevant, generally clear and explained sufficiently. It could include more details /information. The questions are answered satisfactorily.
There is not a lot of research included. There is some information missing. The questions are not all answered. The research is not written in your own words.
Visual Part
The visuals are very attractive to look at, are very neat and precise, and are used well to help explain and represent your subject.

The visuals are neat, precise, and help to explain and represent your subject.
The visuals are satisfactory. It comes across as rushed and quickly put-together. They sufficiently do the job to help represent your subject.
The visuals are not neat or precise. They look sloppy. They don’t help to explain or represent your subject. There are no visuals.
Spelling and Grammar
Almost no grammar or spelling errors
Only a few grammar and spelling errors
Some grammar and spelling errors
Many grammar and spelling errors
Presentation of the project
It is very well organized, prepared and explained. The audience is very engaged and the presenters are enthusiastic.
